In brief

Amid ongoing conflict, U.S. officials are pressing Israel to increase aid shipments to Gaza, yet recent data shows the situation is worsening rather than improving.

In an urgent letter dated October 13, 2024, the Biden administration warned Israel to boost humanitarian aid to Gaza, which has dropped to its lowest levels since the outbreak of violence on October 7, 2023. With the threat of potential military aid cutoffs looming, the U.S. gave Israel a 30-day window to remedy the situation. However, despite a small uptick in the number of trucks allowed into Gaza, overall deliveries of essential supplies like food and medical assistance remain alarmingly deficient.Trucks began entering Gaza more frequently in response to the U.S. deadline, but the quantities have consistently fallen short of Biden administration expectations. Reports indicate aid and commercial goods entering Gaza since the warning have not only failed to increase, but the numbers are actually lower than those recorded in September prior to the U.S. ultimatum. On Tuesday, Vedant Patel, a spokesman for the State Department, acknowledged that while Israelis have made some essential changes concerning aid delivery, "more progress" is required to meet humanitarian needs. Still, as it stands, the U.S. has chosen not to impose military aid cuts, citing positive changes, albeit insufficient. The drop in aid coincided with an Israeli embargo instituted earlier this month, targeting commerce to prevent Hamas from benefiting from trade during the heightened conflict. The Israeli military has intensified its offensive against Hamas, particularly in northern Gaza, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis as thousands flee from their homes amidst the fighting. The U.S. continues to monitor the situation closely while urging Israel to balance its security concerns with humanitarian obligations to the civilian population caught in the conflict.
