Dawson's Creek actors have led tributes to James Van Der Beek, who has died at the age of 48 after suffering from bowel cancer.

In a handwritten statement posted on Instagram, Katie Holmes remembered Van Der Beek and his bravery, compassion, selflessness and strength, as well as the actor's appreciation for life.

Co-star Busy Philipps wrote: James Van Der Beek was one in a billion and he will be forever missed and I don't know what else to say. I am just so so sad. Other stars reacting to Van Der Beek's death include Reese Witherspoon, who expressed her devastation and remarked on his talent and kindness.

What an extraordinary, talented man who also showed great kindness and grace in every action, Witherspoon shared on Instagram.

Van Der Beek was diagnosed with cancer in the latter half of 2023 and revealed the news in late last year.

The star played Dawson Leery in the hit TV show, which ran from 1998 to 2003, as well as starring in films like Varsity Blues. Holmes noted how she mourns his absence with heartfelt gratitude for the memories they shared.

A GoFundMe page set up to help support his widow Kimberley and their six children has already raised $1.2 million by Thursday morning, highlighting the community's support for the family during this difficult time.

Philipps, who played a university roommate of Joey, added, He was my friend and I loved him and I'm so grateful for our friendship all these years.

Mary-Margaret Humes, who portrayed Van Der Beek's mother on Dawson's Creek, expressed her love and admiration for him, stating, James, my gracious warrior, you fought a hard battle against all odds with such quiet strength and dignity.

Numerous actors, from Chad Michael Murray to Sarah Michelle Gellar, shared their condolences and memories, illustrating how deeply Van Der Beek touched the lives of those around him.
