Gloria Steinem Dies at 92
Feminist icon and journalist Gloria Steinem has passed away peacefully at her New York home, surrounded by loved ones, according to a post by her foundation.
Born in 1934 in Toledo, Ohio, Steinem emerged as a leader of the 1970s women’s liberation movement. She co‑founded Ms Magazine, the first publication to address women’s issues beyond domestic concerns, and helped launch the Women’s Action Alliance to fight sexism.
Her activism extended to exposing exploitative working conditions at Playboy, championing the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling, supporting same‑sex marriage and campaigning for equal pay and the abolition of the death penalty and female genital mutilation.
In 2013, President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She remained active until her death, hosting community “Talking Circles” at her home and continuing to write and engage with supporters.
Tributes poured in from Meghan Markle, who described her as a lifelong friend and mentor, and from Hillary Clinton, who praised Steinem’s optimism and foundational role in building women’s equality. The legacy of Steinem inspires new generations of feminists worldwide.
