Ghana mourns the passing of Sulemana Abdul Samed, famously known as Awuche, the tallest man in the country. He died at 33 in a Tamale hospital after complications from infections on his legs, a condition linked to his Marfan syndrome and gigantism diagnosis.
Measuring 223cm (7 ft 4 in) when verified by the BBC in 2023, Awuche’s extraordinary height made him a local celebrity in the northern town of Gambaga. His community lauded him for his generous nature and the pride he brought to the region.
Awuche’s condition was worsened by sores that became infected during his hospital stay. Family reports show the infection started as a complication of his condition, contributing to his fatal outcome.
He had recently gained financial support from Ibrahim Mahama, brother of former President John Mahama, who helped cover medical expenses at Tamale Teaching Hospital. The benefactor had met Awuche and arranged for treatment updates.
The community of Gambaga was devastated by the sudden loss, as Awuche had helped bring recognition and identity to the village. The family opted to bury him in Tamale to avoid an overwhelming rush of mourners.
Awuche’s story underscores the broader challenges faced by those living with rare genetic disorders in Ghana, and the critical need for sustained medical support.
