SACRAMENTO, Calif. (RTW) — Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell suspended his campaign for California governor on Sunday following sexual assault allegations that he continues to deny.

“I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made — but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s,” Swalwell stated in a social media post.

Democrats quickly distanced themselves from Swalwell after allegations he sexually assaulted a woman twice, including during her employment with him. The revelations were reported by the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN, coinciding with Swalwell's rising status in the Democratic primary.

His exit from the race comes just weeks ahead of the June 2 primary, as Democrats engage in a tumultuous campaign. Swalwell's rivals, including prominent figures within the party, have urged him to withdraw, resulting in a significant loss of support among allies and endorsers.

Some have called for Swalwell to resign his congressional seat, although he did not address this issue in his announcement.

In a succession of statements, Swalwell has acknowledged personal shortcomings, although he maintains his innocence regarding the assault allegations.

The governor's race in California was already a crowded landscape, with Swalwell initially gaining momentum. His departure is expected to provide opportunities for remaining candidates to capture his supporters and fundraising potential.

The allegations against Swalwell include claims of incidents from 2019 and 2024, with ongoing investigations. While fellow House Democrats have expressed their concerns, the Board of Representatives may take up the issue of expulsion given the gravity of the situation.

As the political landscape shifts, Swalwell will have to navigate mounting pressure from within the party as the campaign unfolds.
