Elon Musk's efforts to stop Russia from using Starlink satellites for drone attacks have delivered 'real results', according to Ukrainian officials. Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov expressed gratitude towards Musk, recognizing him as 'a true champion of freedom and a true friend of the Ukrainian people'. He highlighted the effectiveness of Musk's swift actions after learning of Russian drones utilizing Starlink connectivity, linked to several deadly attacks in Ukraine.
One significant incident referenced was an attack on a moving passenger train that resulted in six casualties. Musk confirmed the effectiveness of the measures taken in an X post, stating, 'Looks like the steps we took to stop the unauthorised use of Starlink by Russia have worked. Let us know if more needs to be done.'
Starlink satellites, which offer high-speed internet globally, have been operational in Ukraine since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. The Russian drones using Starlink have presented formidable challenges due to their low-flying capabilities, complicating countermeasures.
Additionally, Ukrainian officials noted that Speed restrictions on Starlink terminals utilized in Ukraine could handicap Russian drone operators, hampering their control due to faster drone speeds. The initiative aims to ensure only authorized devices can operate within the region.
Fedorov further indicated that the Ukrainian government is planning to implement a whitelist of approved Starlink terminals while unregistered ones would be disconnected. Despite potential implications for Russian military communications, the defence ministry seeks to enhance its national security protocols with these measures.
Since the onset of the conflict, Musk's relationship with Ukraine has seen fluctuations, yet his contributions through Starlink have been pivotal in maintaining communication lines for Ukraine’s defense efforts.
