Daniel Kinahan made his first appearance in a Dublin courtroom after being extradited from Dubai following his arrest there in April. He faced charges of directing the activities of a criminal organisation between October 2015 and April 2017.

At the Special Criminal Court, the 49‑year‑old confirmed to the judge that he would not be receiving bail. The Kinahan cartel has been responsible for trafficking tonnes of drugs and firearms around the world for more than two decades, according to the UK National Crime Agency.

BBC Ireland correspondent Chris Page was inside the court during the hearing and captured the tense atmosphere as the proceedings unfolded.
