BARCELONA, Spain (rtwnews) — James “Jimmy” Gracey, a college student from Illinois, was found dead after going missing during a trip to Barcelona. Local authorities reported on Friday that the incident appears to be an accident.
Gracey's body was discovered on Thursday afternoon in the sea, close to where he was last seen leaving the Shoko nightclub with friends around 3 a.m. on Tuesday. Family members described his failure to return to their rented accommodations as alarming, prompting concern when his phone was recovered later by police.
A spokesperson for Spain's regional police indicated that an autopsy would be conducted, but they believe all indications suggest an accidental death.
The 20-year-old, originally from Elmhurst, Illinois, was studying at the University of Alabama. His family released a statement expressing their devastation over his loss, highlighting his beloved status among relatives and friends.
“Our family is heartbroken as we confirm that Jimmy’s body has been recovered in Barcelona. He was a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend,” they wrote, requesting privacy and prayers during their difficult time.
Barcelona, a renowned tourist destination, is generally deemed safe, particularly in comparison to major U.S. cities where theft is the primary concern for visitors. The area where Gracey was last seen is a popular stretch of beach frequented by both locals and tourists.
The University of Alabama expressed deep sorrow over the news, stating, Jimmy’s loss is deeply felt across our campus. Our condolences are with the Gracey family during this devastating time. In a previous interview, Gracey’s aunt remembered him fondly, describing him as a “great kid, a good Catholic boy from the Midwest.
