In a significant escalation of military operations, Israeli fighter jets targeted multiple sites in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on Thursday, resulting in a reported death toll of 15 and injuries to 16 others, including women and children, according to Syrian state media. The attacks were concentrated in the al-Mezzeh neighborhood at around 3:20 p.m. local time, causing substantial structural damage to several buildings.
The Israeli military has stated that these strikes inflicted "significant damage" to a command center linked to Palestinian Islamic Jihad, an Iranian-supported militia. They have criticized the Syrian government for enabling such militant operations within its borders.
For years, Israel has conducted airstrikes in Syria aimed at curbing the influence and operations of Iranian-backed groups, notably Hezbollah and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. While Israel traditionally refrains from confirming specific strikes, recent months have seen a shift, with Israeli officials openly acknowledging their military actions.
Israeli military chief of staff Herzi Halevi commented on the ongoing operations, stating, "We are conducting deep strikes and striking frequently in Syria and along the Syria-Lebanon border to prevent weapons transfers to Hezbollah."
In related reports, Iranian media highlighted that an Israeli missile also struck a building in Damascus where Iranian official Ali Larijani was meeting with Syria’s National Security Committee director. Fortunately, Larijani was unharmed during the incident, as per the Khabar Online news outlet.
