In brief
R&B singer Chris Brown avoided jail after striking a club patron with a glass bottle. He received an eight‑month suspended sentence and will remain free unless he re‑offends within a year. The court also sent his vocal coach a four‑month suspended sentence and imposed costs on both. CCTV footage showed the attack lasted about 20 seconds in a packed club in Mayfair. The judge cited the violence as ‘plainly dangerous’ and ‘intense’ but took into account Brown’s guilty plea and family responsibilities.
British court sentences R'B singer Chris Brown for a bottle‑fighting club incident
After striking musician Abraham “Abe” Diaw twice in the head with a glass tequila bottle in Mayfair’s private club Tape on 19 February 2023, Brown pleaded guilty to affray. Judge Tony Baumgartner handed down an eight‑month prison term, suspended for 12 months, meaning he will stay free unless he re‑offends during that period.
Brown’s vocal coach, rapper Omololu Akinlolu, who joined the attack, received a four‑month suspended sentence. Both men were ordered to pay £1,500 in court costs.
CCTV footage shown to the court showed Brown hitting Diaw four times with the bottle—twice to the head and once to the shoulder—within about 20 seconds in a cramped, packed club. Judge Baumgartner described the weapon as a “heavy square‑shaped tequila bottle” and called the violence “plainly dangerous” and “intense”.
Despite his star status, the judge said the law applied equally to everyone and highlighted Brown’s guilty plea, his willingness to comply with bail conditions and the potential impact on his four children. He noted Brown’s “low risk of further offending” and let him go without custodial time.
After sentencing, Brown was seen leaving court with hands clasped with Akinlolu, and fans cheered as he stopped to sign autographs. He posted an Instagram story from his car, giving a thumbs‑up to viewers.
