In brief
Mish and Lucy, two 5-year-old brown bears in a Devon wildlife sanctuary, escaped their pen and indulged in a week's supply of honey. The incident prompted an emergency alert, but guests were kept safe during the bears' sweet adventure.
Mish and Lucy, two European brown bear siblings residing at a wildlife sanctuary in Devon, England, recently made headlines when they broke out of their enclosure and went on a honey-stealing spree. The playful 5-year-olds have garnered quite a reputation for their friendly demeanor and love of fruit and nuts, but on this occasion, they took it a step further. On Monday afternoon, Wildwood Trust’s director of zoological operations, Mark Habben, received an urgent call alerting him to a “code red” situation at the sanctuary—this time, it wasn't a drill. Being four hours away at the Kent location, Habben immediately set the emergency protocols in motion. Sixteen visitors were safely relocated to a nearby play barn as authorities were contacted, ensuring that no one was in harm's way while Lucy and Mish explored their newfound freedom. In an amusing twist reminiscent of classic children's stories, video surveillance captured Lucy's resourcefulness as she broke into a food container, ultimately leading to an all-you-can-eat honey buffet. The bears consumed an impressive amount—equivalent to a week's supply—in just about an hour. Thankfully, both bears were secured shortly after their sugar-fueled escapade, and no disruptions were reported among the sanctuary's guests or staff.
