In brief

In a significant escalation of the Syrian conflict, rebel factions launched a large-scale offensive in Aleppo, resulting in substantial casualties and the capture of a key military installation.

Syrian opposition forces have initiated a major offensive in the western Aleppo region, leading to the deaths of at least 89 individuals and the seizure of a strategic military base, according to reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights based in Britain. This surge in violence marks the most significant escalation in the ongoing Syrian conflict in recent years. On Wednesday, fighters from various armed groups, including the Al Qaeda-linked Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, advanced within approximately six miles of Aleppo, capturing military vehicles and weapons previously held by forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad's government. Casualty figures have yet to be fully verified as the situation develops. The opposition factions communicated via the Telegram app, announcing their capture of Base 46, the largest government stronghold in the region, along with numerous tanks and members of pro-government forces. The armed groups also reported their control over several villages in the countryside west of Aleppo. "The rapid advancements made by these armed groups, reaching only four to five kilometers from the city of Aleppo, hold immense significance," remarked Charles Lister, director for Syria and counterterrorism at the Middle East Institute. The Syrian government's response has yet to be reported. This offensive is noted to be the first major push by rebel forces since 2020, when a cease-fire brokered by Turkey and Russia helped quell fighting in the Idlib region. Current developments indicate a growing instability, as pro-regime militias have intensified their attacks, a response attributed to a weakening of the Syrian regime's allies, including Hezbollah and Iran due to Israeli offensives. Experts suggest that the initial success of the rebel forces underscores a notable shift in balance, illustrating both the vulnerabilities of the Syrian government and the growing capabilities of the opposition factions. "Years ago, such an offensive would have been met with significant resistance from the regime," Mr. Lister added, highlighting the comprehensive advancements made by groups like Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in resources and operations.Dr. Mustafa Aledou, who is situated less than 20 miles from the frontline in Idlib, described how his family has been affected by the violence, stating they awoke to the sound of bombings and ongoing clashes. Local authorities have since ordered the closure of schools and major public markets in light of the escalating conflict. This growing volatility in the region calls for close monitoring as the balance of power continues to shift amid the complex dynamics of the Syrian civil war.
