In brief
U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken announced that the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan committed genocidal acts, leading to sanctions against its leader and financial backers. These measures aim to counter the ethnically targeted violence rampant in Darfur.
Sudan has erupted into chaos, with the U.S. government now declaring the civil war's violence as genocide. The Secretary of State, Antony J. Blinken, denounced the horrific actions of the Rapid Support Forces (R.S.F.), a paramilitary group that has reportedly engaged in widespread killings and sexual violence against targeted ethnic groups in the Darfur region. In an official statement, Blinken highlighted the systematic nature of the violence, stating that the R.S.F., often in conjunction with allied militias, has murdered countless individuals based on ethnicity, including men, women, and even infants. The troops also commit severe acts of sexual violence against women from specific ethnic communities and have actively targeted fleeing civilians, making it increasingly difficult for them to access vital humanitarian supplies. In response to the disturbing revelations, the U.S. Treasury Department introduced a series of financial sanctions targeting key figures associated with the R.S.F., including its leader, General Mohamed Hamdan, as well as seven companies in the United Arab Emirates that have been identified as significant financial backers of the group. This condemnation comes nearly two decades after the U.S. government similarly recognized genocide-related actions committed in Sudan, particularly against the Janjaweed militia, that had carried out atrocities during a counterinsurgency campaign in Darfur. As the humanitarian crisis continues to unfold, the international community is urged to pay closer attention to the dire situation in Sudan.
