In brief

For a decade, a church serving Kenya's LGBTQ+ community has been forced to relocate numerous times due to violence and discrimination. Now, hidden away, this congregation finds solace in their faith amidst societal hostility.

For nearly ten years, the only church in Kenya catered to the L.G.B.T.Q. community has faced a barrage of attacks and intimidation, forcing it to relocate ten times. Each time they sought refuge, they encountered resistance: their first venue was vandalized, police arrests marred their gatherings in a public park, and more recently, they faced hostility from neighbors. Despite these challenges, the congregation has now secured a new, undisclosed sanctuary. On a recent Sunday, the atmosphere was charged with both emotion and reverence as close to 100 worshipers gathered in a nondescript building. Security checks were conducted by church members to ensure a safe environment for all attendees. As the pastor's sermon resonated within the walls, many congregants openly wept, finding solace in his words that underscored their struggles and triumphs: “Family may kick you out, and the church you once attended could not understand that kind of expression, demonizing your life.” He assured them of their rightful place within spiritual texts, prompting a powerful communal response of “Amen.”The service is a beacon of hope for many who fled oppressive environments where identification as LGBTQ+ could lead to dire consequences. Here, they are free to embrace their sexual and gender identities, alongside their faith, fostering a community that profoundly understands their struggles. Typically, attendance varies from 50 to 200 members each week, illustrating the critical role this underground church plays in their lives as both a spiritual refuge and a support network against adversity.
