In a dramatic escalation of unrest, Pakistan has deployed its army within Islamabad, ordering troops to be prepared to use lethal force if deemed necessary, as tensions rise between law enforcement and supporters of the imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The confrontation has led to at least six security personnel fatalities, as thousands of protesters marched into the capital on Tuesday, demanding Khan's release from jail.
The situation intensified when police retaliated with tear gas and rubber bullets against crowds determined to reach a central square near vital government offices for a planned rally. Roadblocks were dismantled, and shipping containers set up to deter demonstrators were pushed aside, as supporters, fueled by patriotic music, advanced, chanting slogans such as "Revolution! Revolution!"
Khan, who has maintained significant popularity as a former cricket star and politician, has been incarcerated since August 2023 following allegations of corruption. He called for the protests over the recent weekend, igniting fervor among his followers. In response, the military-backed government fortified the capital by imposing a lockdown, restricting major highways, and limiting cellular and internet access across several regions. However, many demonstrators still managed to infiltrate the city on Monday night.
Official sources stated the army's primary objective is to secure key government installations, with directives issued for troops to use deadly force if the situation calls for it. Compounding the unrest, reports emerged that four members of the paramilitary forces were killed by protestors who allegedly hit them with a vehicle; such claims were denied by Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (P.T.I.). Additionally, two police officers fell victim to earlier disturbances as the violence grew throughout the day.
