In brief

As a truce looms, the people of Gaza are filled with both hope and uncertainty, yearning to reconnect with loved ones and reclaim their lives amid the ruins of war.

Amid the backdrop of ongoing conflict, Gaza's residents find themselves filled with dreams of returning to their homes as a cease-fire approaches this weekend. With the announcement of a cease-fire deal expected, many families anticipate reuniting with loved ones and mourning those who may not have survived the last 15 months of war. Fifteen-year-old Layan al-Mohtaseb expressed her longing to clean her bedroom in Gaza City, revealing a fragile hope as she envisions escaping their current displacement. "This time, it feels like we're truly going home," she said, although the shadow of uncertainty looms with concerns that fighting may reignite after the initial six-week truce. In the days leading up to the potential cease-fire, residents mobilized their efforts. While News outlets reported the Israeli security cabinet's indirect negotiations concerning cease-fire agreements and the release of hostages, Gazans were actively searching for trucks, vans, and even donkey carts to transport their belongings back home. Fedaa al-Rayyes, 40, is among those preparing for this momentous occasion. Her plans included making an array of festive sweets to mark the end of the war, indicative of a yearning for celebration. However, she acknowledges the somber reality of reconnecting with family members who may have been lost in the conflict. She stated, "The first thing I plan to do when the bombs and drones fall silent is to search for relatives I haven’t seen in months." As the potential cease-fire draws closer, Gazans are caught between the prospect of peace and the reality of their shattered lives, eager to embrace love, and mourn losses as they cautiously hope for an end to their suffering.
