A violent shelling in North Darfur's Abu Shouk camp has resulted in fears of multiple fatalities, as the conflict in Sudan escalates further.
Heavy artillery fire by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeted the crowded marketplace in North Darfur’s Abu Shouk camp for approximately two hours on Tuesday evening, creating widespread panic among the residents. A local official reported to the BBC that many people are feared dead following the assault during peak shopping hours, when many were preparing to break their fast in observance of Ramadan.
The Abu Shouk camp shelters over half a million internally displaced individuals who have fled violence across Sudan. This incident marks the second assault on the camp within three days, with the previous attack resulting in six civilian deaths, according to local health volunteers.
El-Fasher, the nearest town and currently the last major stronghold under army control, has been engulfed in siege by the RSF for almost a year. The conflict, now in its ninth month, has led to numerous atrocities and genocide accusations against the RSF, particularly toward non-Arab groups in Darfur.
Reports indicate rising casualties and worsening humanitarian conditions, with medical personnel at the last functioning hospital in el-Fasher, led by Dr. Ibrahim Nadyan, detailing a range of injuries from Tuesday's attack, some of which are deemed severe.
The state of Sudan remains dire, as tens of thousands have lost their lives since violence erupted in April 2023, millions have been displaced, and a significant portion of the population is facing severe food shortages. As the RSF maintains control over substantial parts of Darfur and the army regains territories in Khartoum and surrounding areas, the conflict's ramifications extend far beyond the immediate violence.
