Russia Expels British Diplomat Amid Rising Espionage Tensions
Claims of espionage lead to diplomatic fallout as tensions escalate between Russia and the UK.
The Russian government has reportedly expelled a British diplomat, accusing him of espionage activities. As per reports from TASS news agency, Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry, stated that the British ambassador was also summoned for discussions. Footage circulating on various platforms shows the British ambassador’s vehicle arriving at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow. The UK Foreign Office has been asked for a statement regarding the situation.
According to state news reports, the FSB security service accused the diplomat – whose image was prominently displayed on televised broadcasts – of providing misleading information regarding his identification documents and engaging in espionage and sabotage. Notably, this expelled diplomat was reportedly appointed to replace one of the six UK diplomats expelled last August under similar espionage charges.
This latest expulsion occurs against a backdrop of escalating animosity between the UK and Russia following the latter's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Recently, it was revealed that the UK had lifted Restrictions on Ukraine's use of British-supplied Storm Shadow missiles against targets within Russian territory for the first time. In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated that these military actions prompted Russia's decision to deploy a new hypersonic missile targeting the Ukrainian city of Dnipro.
Since the onset of the war in Ukraine, waves of diplomatic expulsions have become increasingly prevalent. Earlier this year, British diplomat Capt Adrian Coghill was ordered to vacate Russia within a week, following the expulsion of a Russian defense attaché from London for purported espionage activities labeled as an "undeclared military intelligence officer.”
