Malaysia Faces Devastating Floods Displacing Thousands
Severe flooding in Malaysia has led to the evacuation of over 120,000 individuals as heavy rains continue to wreak havoc.
The flooding crisis stemmed from heavy rainfall earlier this week, predominantly affecting Kelantan, a northern state bordering Thailand. Presently, Kelantan accounts for 63% of the 122,000 evacuees. The region is experiencing a higher displacement rate than what was recorded during the catastrophic floods of 2014. In total, the National Disaster Management Agency has established 679 emergency shelters across the nation, with affected states including Terengganu, Kedah, Negeri Sembilan, Perlis, Selangor, Johor, Melaka, and Perak. Emergency provisions have been dispatched to both the Terengganu and Kelantan state governments to assist with recovery efforts, as the Prime Minister has prohibited cabinet members from taking leave to remain focused on the crisis.
In a parallel situation, Thailand is also grappling with severe flooding, impacting over 240,000 households within six provinces, prompting the deployment of army units for rescue operations. As Malaysia's monsoon season begins in November, flooding is a common occurrence, but the intensity of this year's crisis echoes the severe floods faced in 2021, which resulted in a tragic loss of life.
