Rescuers say 20 people have been injured in southern Israel after the Israeli military reported a drone launched from Yemen struck the resort town of Eilat on the Red Sea coast. The Magen David Adom emergency medical service indicated that 20 individuals were transported to Yoseftal Hospital, including two with serious limb injuries.

While Israeli media has characterized the incident as a Houthi strike, the Yemeni group has not officially confirmed responsibility. Live footage aired by Israeli TV stations depicted the immediate aftermath of the attack, showing rising smoke from the location.

Verified social media footage displayed a drone disappearing behind buildings and moments later, birds rising in the air in response to the attack. The IDF confirmed that troops and police were dispatched and a helicopter was used to evacuate the injured.

The military has advised individuals in the area to seek shelter for ten minutes if alarms are sounded, following warnings triggered by air raid sirens across town.

This attack would mark a significant escalation if claimed by the Houthis, potentially the most serious targeting of Israel in terms of casualties. Notably, in July 2024, a similar drone attack in Tel Aviv resulted in one death and ten injuries when it struck near the US embassy branch office.

Moreover, Eilat has recently faced multiple drone strikes; one week ago, an attack targeted a hotel area, thankfully with no casualties reported. Earlier, a drone attack on Ramon Airport, adjacent to Eilat, resulted in one injury.

The Houthis have been launching missiles and drones at Israel, framed as acts of solidarity during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, while also targeting vessels in the Red Sea.

With the group in control of Sanaa and parts of north-west Yemen while lacking recognition as the legitimate government, their hostile actions towards Israel have resulted in retaliatory strikes. A recent Israeli operation reportedly killed 35 individuals in Yemen.

In August, they announced the death of their self-proclaimed Prime Minister from an Israeli air strike, adding to the increasing tensions in the region.
