Israeli Forces Remain in Lebanon After Withdrawal Deadline Expires

Lebanon demands complete withdrawal, as Israeli troops stay at strategic points in the south.

In a delicate security situation, Israel's presence in Lebanon is a contentious issue amid ongoing tensions with Hezbollah.

Israeli troops have partially withdrawn from southern Lebanon, retaining five positions despite a deadline set by the ceasefire agreement that concluded a year-long conflict involving Hezbollah. This withdrawal, reported by Lebanon's state news agency, is tied to Israel's commitment to peace in the region. While Israeli ministers justify the presence of troops as necessary for the security of northern Israeli communities, the Lebanese government insists that any Israeli troops remaining on its territory equates to an occupation.

The ceasefire stipulates Israel's withdrawal, alongside the requirement for the Lebanese military to establish order in the south, particularly replacing armed groups like Hezbollah, which had significantly dominated the region for years. The recent conflict, noted as one of the deadliest interactions since Hezbollah's inception in 1982, left thousands of casualties on both sides, with over 3,960 reported fatalities in Lebanon, primarily among civilians. The displacement figures were similarly stark, with around one million Lebanese citizens uprooted from their homes.

Israeli officials have noted that 80 Israeli soldiers and 47 civilians also lost their lives, with around 60,000 residents displaced within Israel’s northern regions. Many of those in Lebanon have gradually returned, while a considerable portion of displaced Israelis remains away from their homes, as noted by recent reports from the UN.

The locations where the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are stationed are characterized by difficult terrain near the internationally recognized border with Lebanon. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz explained the temporary retention of these strategic points was crucial for the nation's security, affirming that Israel would lift this presence once Lebanon fulfills its obligations under the ceasefire agreement.

As new military movements transpired, Lebanese forces entered areas previously held by Israeli troops, beginning cleanup efforts and securing neighborhoods. Villagers attempted to return to their homes, often finding them damaged from the conflict. One such villager, Atef Arabi, expressed a mix of joy and sorrow as he approached his home with family, stating he was prepared to rebuild if necessary.

Israeli officials, meanwhile, have pledged to maintain stringent enforcement against Hezbollah and have vowed to prevent a recurrence of violent incidents experienced on October 7, 2023, igniting a series of conflicts in the region. Hezbollah, in response to Israel’s military actions, has framed its own military operations as a show of solidarity with Palestinian groups.
