Residents fear industrial waste as peculiar river color emerges in Sarandí

In a concerning environmental incident, a stream in Sarandí has suddenly transformed to a vivid red hue, potentially due to factory discharges.

A stream in Sarandí, located just south of Buenos Aires, has recently become an alarming shade of red, raising suspicions among residents about potential industrial pollution. As reports surfaced this week, locals expressed their concern that the striking color change could be linked to chemicals from nearby factories and tanneries, with many fearing for the health of the Río de la Plata, the significant waterway it feeds into.

Witnesses noted an overpowering smell, likened to garbage, with one resident, Maria Ducomls, recalling how the unpleasant odor disturbed her sleep. She described the stream’s appearance as "like a river covered in blood." This is not an isolated incident; Ducomls mentioned previous instances where the stream changed color to shades of blue, green, and pink, sometimes accompanied by an oily film on its surface.

Historically, the waterways in this region have faced severe contamination challenges, particularly the Matanza-Riachuelo River basin, notorious for its pollution levels. In response to ongoing environmental concerns, the official bodies have initiated several public works aimed at controlling sewage and industrial runoff into the basin.

The environmental ministry for the Province of Buenos Aires has confirmed that they are investigating the incident, having collected water samples for analysis. Preliminary assessments suggest the unusual color may originate from "some type of organic dye." However, as of now, test results have yet to be disclosed.

Experts in environmental policy have pointed to systemic issues contributing to the area's pollution, with professor Moira Zellner highlighting the "chronic lack of regulation and enforcement." She expressed that the red stream is a manifestation of an ongoing environmental crisis which is distressing for local communities. Carlos Colángelo, president of the Professional Council of Chemistry, echoed her concerns about the possibility of unscrupulous companies neglecting proper waste disposal protocols, stressing the need for accountability.

As investigations continue, the community remains anxious about the potential repercussions of pollution on both the environment and public health.
