In a shocking incident at Avalon Airport near Melbourne, a 17-year-old armed with a shotgun and ammunition attempted to board a Jetstar flight, resulting in swift action from passengers and crew. The plane, carrying 160 individuals, was preparing for departure when the teenager managed to breach a security fence and access the tarmac. Eyewitnesses reported that as the suspect climbed the stairs to the aircraft, he was quickly noticed by passengers who acted heroically to tackle him to the ground.
The unidentified teen, who hails from the Ballarat area, has since been taken into police custody, where he faces a total of eight charges, including unlawfully attempting to take control of an aircraft, endangering its safety, and making a bomb hoax. Victoria Police confirmed that a bomb specialist was called in to search a nearby vehicle and two bags connected to the suspect.
Footage from the incident, shared by 7News, captured the tense moment as the suspect was overpowered by at least three passengers. A crew member and the pilot also intervened, assisting in disarming the teenager and removing a utility belt he was carrying. "How is this possible?" a passenger voiced the concerns shared by many onboard as the terrifying situation unfolded.
Superintendent Michael Reid noted that the gun was visible as the teen approached the airplane, commenting on the bravery exhibited by those who helped subdue him. The police are in contact with counterterrorism units but have indicated that it is premature to discuss a motive for the incident. Remarkably, no injuries were reported during this harrowing episode.
One passenger, Barry Clark, described the gunman as appearing agitated and dressed like an airport employee. His actions included removing the shotgun from the suspect's grasp and restraining him until authorities arrived. In light of this alarming security breach, Jetstar confirmed it is collaborating with law enforcement to investigate the matter, extending gratitude to those who assisted in managing the situation.
Avalon Airport, exclusively serviced by Jetstar, has since reopened following the incident, and the CEO reassured the public of their commitment to safety.
