Israel Halts Aid to Gaza as Tensions Escalate in Cease-Fire Negotiations
Israeli government demands release of hostages amid humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Israel has announced an immediate halt on the entry of goods and humanitarian assistance into Gaza, an action aimed at pressuring Hamas into accepting a temporary extension of the cease-fire deal. This drastic move threatens to disrupt the negotiations for a lasting end to the war, exacerbating the dire situation for the two million residents of Gaza.
The initial six-week cease-fire agreement that began earlier was marred by various setbacks but allowed for the exchange of 25 living Israeli hostages and the remains of eight deceased ones for approximately 1,500 Palestinian prisoners. The deal had also facilitated an increase in aid to the beleaguered enclave.
However, the agreement's next phase, which called for a full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza alongside commitments to a permanent cease-fire, remains uncertain. Just hours before announcing the cessation of aid, Israel introduced a proposal for a seven-week extension of the cease-fire. Under this proposal, Hamas must release half of the remaining hostages and the remains of half of the deceased hostages before a permanent cease-fire can be discussed.
"Israel will not allow a cease-fire without the release of our hostages," stated an official from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, underscoring the government's stance on the hostage crisis amidst the ongoing conflict.
