Russia-Ukraine Conflict: Cease-Fire Hopes Expressed by Rubio
Secretary of State urges G7 allies to focus on peace discussions in Canada.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed optimism on Wednesday about the possibility of a cease-fire between Russia and Ukraine, stating that it could happen within “days” if Russian leaders are willing to cooperate. Speaking to reporters during a stop in Ireland while traveling to Canada for a Group of 7 meeting, Rubio emphasized the importance of ending hostilities and moving toward negotiation.
“What we’d like to see is a world where neither side is shooting at each other — no rockets, missiles, or bullets,” he commented, advocating for an immediate halt to fighting. Rubio aims to rally G7 diplomats to direct their efforts towards establishing peace in the region as tensions escalate.
Additionally, he dismissed concerns about potential backlash from international allies due to President Trump's recent controversial remarks and tariffs affecting Canada. As he prepares for discussions with Canadian officials, he made it clear this meeting is not about any annexation policies suggested by Trump, who has previously threatened to make Canada the 51st state.
In a prior meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Rubio and national security adviser Michael Waltz engaged in extensive discussions with Ukrainian officials regarding potential avenues for negotiations with Russia. Following their talks, Ukrainian representatives indicated agreement on an American-proposed 30-day interim cease-fire. This development comes after a period of strained relations in which Trump had withheld vital aid to Ukraine in a bid to push for negotiations.
As diplomatic efforts intensify, the global eyes remain fixated on the outcomes of the G7 summit and the ongoing war that has plagued Ukraine since Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its subsequent full-scale invasion in 2022.
