Deadly Crowd Crushes in Nigeria Claim 22 Lives Amid Rising Hunger

Tragic incidents related to food distribution events highlight Nigeria's growing crisis.

In a shocking series of crowd-control failures, Nigeria has seen multiple deadly incidents in which total fatalities now stand at 22, escalating concerns over rising hunger and poor management of charity events.

The recent tragedies began at a charity event in Okija, South-East Nigeria, on Saturday, which turned deadly as crowds surged to collect Christmas food donations, such as rice and vegetable oil. This marked the third such event in a week, following a crush at a Catholic church in Abuja that claimed 10 lives, and another incident in Ibadan where 35 children were killed during a carnival.

Police are now enforcing stricter regulations for crowd management at charity events, amid urgent calls from organizations like Amnesty International for government intervention to address the escalating hunger crisis in Nigeria. Witness testimonies reported chaotic scenes, as overwhelmed crowds pushed through barriers in desperate attempts to access food aid.

In response to the tragedies, President Bola Tinubu expressed his condolences and emphasized the need for improved crowd control measures, marking a regretful acknowledgment of the systemic issues exacerbating these crises.

As food prices in Nigeria have tripled over the past year and inflation bites deep into the population’s resources, the government's approach, including the elimination of certain subsidies, is being scrutinized. Analysts urge for a reinforced framework to ensure that such humanitarian efforts do not lead to further loss of life.
