Tragic Bus Collision Claims 37 Lives in Bolivia
A devastating bus crash near Uyuni has resulted in nearly 40 fatalities and numerous injuries.
At least 37 individuals have lost their lives and 30 others sustained injuries following a horrific collision between two passenger buses in Bolivia. The crash occurred early Saturday morning, approximately 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the south-western city of Uyuni, according to police reports.
Commanding officer Wilson Flores disclosed that one bus driver is currently in intensive care while the other is stable. Grief-stricken images from Bolivian media depict a severely damaged bus, with its structure dismantled and luggage strewn across the roadside.
Reports indicate that the crash transpired on the route connecting Uyuni and Colchani due to a "lane invasion." One of the buses was en route to Oruro, the site of the famous Oruro Carnival, celebrated as one of Latin America’s largest festivals.
Rescue operations concluded by 10:00 local time (14:00 GMT), with the injured being transported to medical facilities in Oruro and Potosí. The identities of the deceased remain unknown, and the condition of the injured passengers is still being assessed.
Commander Flores mentioned that authorities are awaiting the results of alcohol tests for both drivers involved in the incident.
Tragically, fatal traffic accidents are a frequent occurrence in Bolivia, with over 30 lives claimed in a similar incident in February when a bus fell nearly 800 meters (2625 ft) into a ravine between the cities of Potosí and Oruro. Just a month prior, another bus accident near Potosí resulted in the deaths of 19 individuals.
According to government statistics, Bolivia sees an average of 1,400 road-related deaths each year in a country with a population of around 12 million.
