Allegations Against Nigeria's Senate President Dismissed Amid Calls for Investigation
A petition alleging sexual harassment against Nigeria's Senate President Godswill Akpabio has been dismissed due to procedural violations, amidst calls for an independent review of the claims.
The ethics committee of Nigeria's Senate has dismissed a petition filed by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, which alleged sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The committee stated that the petition could not be entertained due to procedural violations and legal constraints, highlighting that Uduaghan had personally signed the petition without the endorsement of another senator, which goes against Senate rules.
During a recent interview, Uduaghan accused Akpabio of making inappropriate advances towards her during a visit to his home in Akwa Ibom state on December 8, 2023. She claimed that Akpabio also suggested she should "take care of him" in exchange for favorable consideration of her motions in the Senate. Uduaghan likened his conduct to that of a university lecturer who threatens to fail students who refuse to engage in sexual favors.
In response, Akpabio vehemently denied the allegations, asserting that he has always respected women and was even honored as Nigeria's most gender-friendly governor. The claims have stirred significant public discourse, with calls for an independent investigation into the matter. Prominent figures, including former Senate President Bukola Saraki, have emphasized the seriousness of the allegations and the need for a thorough examination.
Protests erupted outside the assembly in Abuja, with divided groups expressing both support for Akpabio and solidarity with Uduaghan, chanting competing slogans. On the day of the dismissal, Uduaghan had officially presented her petition to Akpabio during a plenary session.
Before ascending to the Senate presidency less than two years ago, Akpabio held the governorship of the oil-rich Akwa Ibom state for eight years and served as minister for Niger Delta affairs under former President Muhammadu Buhari. The unfolding events continue to captivate public attention, reflecting broader issues of gender and power dynamics in Nigerian politics.
