The event unfolded on March 23 when a convoy of vehicles from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS)—comprising ambulances, a UN vehicle, and a fire truck—came under fire from Israeli forces. In the aftermath, a deputy commander involved in the incident was dismissed for providing an inaccurate report during the debriefing.
The IDF emphasized that its troops opened fire under the belief that they were facing a threat from enemy combatants, although their findings indicated that six of the deceased were Hamas affiliates. Importantly, the IDF has denied any allegations of summary executions, despite not substantiating claims of affiliations with Hamas for the killed medics.
According to the report, the confrontation took place in a "hostile and dangerous combat zone," with the on-ground commander mistakenly perceiving an imminent threat due to "poor night visibility." Initially, Israeli officials claimed the convoy’s approach was suspicious due to the lack of headlights or coordination, but they later acknowledged this statement as "mistaken" after video evidence surfaced from a medic’s phone showing the vehicles displaying emergency lights.
The footage captured the convoy approaching the scene shortly before the gunfire erupted, leading to a distressing portrayal of the events as one of the medics uttered final prayers before Israeli soldiers approached the vehicles. There were also claims that the vehicles were clearly marked, and the medics wore visible uniforms at the time.
The bodies of the deceased emergency workers were reportedly left undiscovered for an entire week, buried in sand, as international agencies struggled to safely access the area.
