Eastern Ukraine Under Drone Siege Amid Intensified Fighting

As cease-fire negotiations have come to a standstill, the battles in eastern Ukraine are escalating, with Ukrainian troops facing a resurgent Russian offensive. Military experts observe that anything caught moving in eastern Ukraine is at significant risk, thanks to Russia's summer offensive leveraging an array of drones to assert control over the area. In towns like Kostiantynivka, Pokrovsk, and Kupiansk, Ukrainian soldiers are under increased pressure to defend supply lines while civil evacuations have become fraught with dangers from the skies. Senior Lt. Yevhen Alkhimov, spokesperson for the 28th Separate Mechanized Brigade, noted that the danger during movements is worsening, even after nightfall when Russian drones equipped with thermal imaging sensors become particularly lethal. He indicated that once inside fortified positions like bunkers or trenches, the soldiers can usually operate safely, but getting to those locations is increasingly perilous.

Desperate to retrieve supplies, Ukrainian soldiers are forced to move swiftly to evade drone strikes. The ongoing aerial warfare not only threatens military efforts but ultimately endangers the lives of civilians and complicates the work of humanitarian groups attempting to facilitate safer evacuations.
