Indonesia Raises Volcano Alert Level as Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki Erupts
Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki erupts, prompting evacuation and safety measures across Flores island.
Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, one of Indonesia's most volatile volcanoes, erupted dramatically on Tuesday, releasing an enormous ash cloud that soared over 11 kilometers into the atmosphere. The eruption occurred at 17:35 local time, resulting in the Indonesian volcanology agency issuing the highest alert level possible.
The eruption prompted the implementation of a 7km exclusion zone surrounding the 1,584-meter-tall volcano, which is characterized by its twin peaks. Fortunately, initial reports indicate no casualties or damages from the blast. However, additional concerns are brewing as the volcano had previously erupted multiple times in November, leading to nine fatalities and the evacuation of thousands.
According to Muhammad Wafid, the head of Indonesia’s geology agency, activities near the volcano are strictly forbidden within the 7km radius, with specific warnings regarding the risk of lahar floods—a dangerous mix of volcanic debris and water, particularly during heavy rainfall. Residents in close proximity have been advised to wear protective face masks to safeguard against the inhalation of volcanic ash.
As part of precautionary measures, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency confirmed that at least one village has been evacuated, and reports indicate ash rains affecting several other surrounding areas. Officials continue to detect tremors, suggesting ongoing volcanic activity, and a spokesperson has urged all residents nearby to seek safe locations away from the volcano.
The last significant activity from Lewotobi Laki-Laki occurred in May, prompting authorities to elevate the alert to maximum levels once again. The volcano, Lewotobi Laki-Laki—which translates to "man" in Indonesian—stands alongside its twin, the taller, more serene Perempuan, meaning "woman" in the native language.
