Far-Right Marchers Clash with Palestinians during Jerusalem Day Celebrations
Tensions escalate in Jerusalem as far-right Israelis engage in violence against Palestinians during the annual Jerusalem Day event.
Crowds of far-right Israelis gathered for an annual celebration of Jerusalem Day on Monday, leading to violent clashes in East Jerusalem’s walled Old City. Reports indicate that the marchers chanted anti-Arab slogans, including “death to Arabs,” as they proceeded through predominantly Palestinian areas. This event commemorates Israel's capture of Palestinian-majority East Jerusalem during the 1967 Arab-Israeli conflict.
Witnesses recounted scenes of harassment as ultranationalist activists confronted Arab traders in the Muslim Quarter. At the same time, Israeli police maintained a heavy presence to contain the unrest, detaining a number of marchers. Opposition figures described the event as a harmful manifestation of hatred against the Palestinian community. Yair Lapid, leader of the opposition, referred to the incidents as heartbreaking and criticized the government’s failure to condemn the violence.
The marchers carried banners promoting nationalistic sentiments, with messages emphasizing claims to Jerusalem and threats toward Gaza. National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir called for the death penalty for terrorists, further inflaming tensions. His controversial visit to the sensitive Al-Aqsa mosque compound, a site contested between Israelis and Palestinians, was condemned by Palestinian authorities.
The ongoing violence is set against the backdrop of Israel's military actions in Gaza, which have resulted in significant casualties on both sides following a deadly attack by Hamas in early October. Jerusalem Day activities included large flag displays, signifying Israel’s assertion of sovereignty over a city that remains divided in its cultural and political affiliations.
Opposition leaders have characterized these displays of nationalistic fervor as detrimental to the fabric of Israeli society, pledging to advocate for a more inclusive Jerusalem representing all its inhabitants, regardless of their backgrounds. As tensions persist, the fragility of peace in the region continues to be a pressing concern for both Israelis and Palestinians.
