British Police Detain Iranian Nationals Amid Counterterrorism Operations
Eight men, including seven Iranian nationals, arrested in London and beyond as part of investigations into potential terrorist plots.
British counterterrorism officials, in a significant operation, have arrested eight men, predominantly Iranian nationals, linked to two separate inquiries, as announced by London’s Metropolitan Police. On Saturday, four Iranians along with one man of undetermined nationality were detained on suspicion of plotting a terrorist act against a specific site, which remains undisclosed for operational security reasons.
Dominic Murphy, the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command lead, underscored that the investigation is fast-paced, and authorities are in close consultation with those associated with the targeted site. “We are exploring various lines of inquiry to establish potential motivations and ascertain if there are further public safety risks,” he stated.
The arrested Iranian nationals include two aged 29, one aged 46, and another aged 40, with detentions occurring in London, Swindon, Stockport, and Rochdale. Another individual was apprehended in the Manchester region.
In a separate series of arrests that same day, three additional Iranian nationals, aged 39, 44, and 55, were taken into custody at different locations in London. These arrests were made under the National Security Act 2023, designed to enhance defense mechanisms against hostile acts against the U.K.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper characterized these arrests as significant, reinforcing the necessity for adaptive strategies concerning national security threats. She reaffirmed the government's commitment to collaborating with law enforcement and intelligence bodies to sustain safety measures across the country.
While detailed information about the nature of the suspected plots remains undisclosed, MI5 head Ken McCallum previously flagged Iran as an escalating concern in counterterrorism efforts, revealing that security services have dealt with 20 Iranian-backed threats since early 2022. One high-profile case involved the recent sentencing of an individual for surveillance activities surrounding Iran International, an Iranian opposition news outlet based in the U.K.
Wes Streeting, the Health Secretary, acknowledged the need to keep the public informed while exercising discretion around ongoing investigations. As police investigations progress, the British authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to curtail potential terrorist activities.
