Severe Delays and Cancellations Hit Eurostar Passengers Following Tragedy and Cable Theft
Passengers are advised to cancel or postpone trips as Eurostar experiences significant service disruptions.
Eurostar passengers are experiencing their second consecutive day of significant delays and cancellations following tragic events on the railway track in France and a subsequent cable theft incident. The high-speed rail company has urged travelers to consider postponing their journeys on Wednesday as the service remains heavily impacted.
Two fatalities occurred on the LGV Nord high-speed line between Lille and Paris on Tuesday, prompting a temporary closure of the line, which created significant backlogs. Eurostar stated that the repercussions of these incidents are ongoing, as a theft of approximately 600 meters of copper cables on the same railway near Lille has further complicated service. Consequently, train routes are being rerouted, leading to extended travel times for passengers.
Travel between London, Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam remains under threat with cancellations and delays being announced at the last minute. Passengers affected by these disruptions can change their plans free of charge or request a full refund. In a statement, Eurostar expressed regret for the inconveniences faced by customers and assured them that teams are collaborating with French authorities to manage the crisis and restore normalcy.
Currently, one track has reopened, allowing a limited number of trains to operate in both directions until full repairs are completed, which is anticipated around 16:00 BST. To ease passenger discomfort, water is being distributed on delayed trains, though station environments are reporting unusually high traffic due to the situation.
