Tragic Nightclub Fire Sparks Outrage and Protests in North Macedonia
Outrage erupts in Kocani as thousands demand accountability for nightclub fire that left 59 dead.
North Macedonia is in a state of mourning following a catastrophic nightclub fire that tragically resulted in the deaths of 59 individuals, predominantly teenagers. The disaster unfolded at the Pulse nightclub in Kocani, where flares ignited a blaze amidst a crowd of fans enjoying a performance by the popular local hip-hop band, DNK.
Prompted by a sense of grief and anger, thousands of residents took to the streets in Kocani, demanding justice and accountability for what they believe to be gross negligence linked to corruption. “Nobody should die like that – nobody,” lamented a teenager during the protests, underscoring the tragic loss of life and talent.
As investigations continue, authorities have detained about 20 individuals, including the nightclub owner and former government officials, in connection with the incident. Many protesters voiced concerns that corrupt practices enabled this improvised venue to operate without essential safety measures.
Relatives of those missing have been seen lining up outside hospitals, anxiously submitting DNA samples for identification. More than 160 people were reported injured due to the fire, with many suffering from severe injuries, prompting urgent transfers to hospitals across Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia, and Turkey for specialized care.
The casualty toll, along with the community’s palpable sorrow, drove the protests, where attendees lit candles, embraced, and shared messages of condolence. A particularly emotional moment occurred when the uncle of a 19-year-old victim drew comparisons to the horrors of war, stating, “Even when there was a war here, it wasn't as bad as that. So many young people have died.”
After moments of quiet reflection, demonstrators began chanting “we are asking for justice!” Amidst the protests, some youths expressed their anger by vandalizing a bar they believed to be connected to the nightclub’s owner.
The fire broke out in the early morning hours, quickly escalating due to the venue's flammable materials. Interior Minister Pance Toskovski indicated potential bribery might be involved in securing illegal licenses for the club, which had only one emergency exit that was locked during the fire. Investigators reported shockingly inadequate safety measures, including just two fire extinguishers and a lack of critical alarm systems.
In the wake of this tragedy, a civic group has organized a nationwide rally, calling for demonstrations in city centers across North Macedonia on Tuesday as communities continue to seek answers and justice.
