Israel Mobilizes Reservists for Escalated Gaza Offensive

The Israeli Defense Forces have mobilized tens of thousands of reservists to intensify their military operations against Hamas in Gaza, which has led to rising casualty figures and international scrutiny.

The Israeli military has made the decision to call up tens of thousands of reservists as it aims to escalate operations against Hamas militants in Gaza. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that it intends to "increase pressure" on Hamas with the objectives of retrieving hostages and dismantling the militant group’s infrastructure both above and below ground. The Israeli security cabinet is slated to vote on further military measures on Sunday, according to local media sources.

Since resuming its offensive on 18 March after a two-month ceasefire with Hamas collapsed, Israel has made substantial territorial gains in Gaza, resulting in the displacement of hundreds of thousands of residents. Israel's blockade of Gaza, initiated on 2 March, has drastically limited the flow of essential goods such as food, fuel, and medicines, prompting warnings from humanitarian organizations about an impending famine and calls to lift the blockade.

Israeli officials maintain that the military operations are concentrated on securing the release of 59 hostages believed to be held by Hamas, with only 24 thought to be alive since the escalation of violence. In response to growing public dissent, thousands of reservists have expressed their concerns in letters, urging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government to prioritize negotiations for hostage release over continued military action.

Public protests demanding an end to the conflict have occurred in various Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv, where the mother of a hostage described the conflict as a "needless war." On the battlefield, casualties continue to rise; reports indicate that two more Israeli soldiers were killed on Sunday, while the Gaza Health Ministry claims that 40 Gazans were killed and 125 injured in the last 24 hours.

The Israeli military's renewed campaign in Gaza commenced following an unprecedented cross-border attack on 7 October 2023, which resulted in significant Israeli casualties and hostages. The ongoing war has claimed at least 52,535 lives in Gaza, according to local health authorities, with 2,436 reported deaths since the offensive resumed in March.
