Sudan Diplomatic Break With UAE Amid Civil War Accusations
Sudan severs ties with the UAE after accusing it of supporting paramilitary forces amid ongoing conflict.
Sudan has officially cut diplomatic ties with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in response to allegations that it has provided support to the rival paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), during the ongoing civil war. This significant move follows three days of escalating aerial attacks in Port Sudan, with incidents including drone strikes targeting vital infrastructure such as the international airport and power stations.
Defence Minister Yassin Ibrahim accused the UAE of infringing Sudan's sovereignty and aiding the RSF, which the Sudanese government holds responsible for the recent assaults. As tensions rise, Sudan’s diplomatic response includes recalling its ambassador from the UAE and shuttering its missions within the Gulf nation.
The conflict in Sudan has resulted in a devastating humanitarian crisis, claiming thousands of lives and displacing millions over the last two years. While the UAE has consistently denied providing military support to the RSF, accusations have surfaced, including claims of arms provision by the Gulf nation to the group.
Internationally, the situation has drawn attention, with both the United Kingdom and the United States urging nations to cease support for Sudan's warring factions. Recently, however, the International Court of Justice rejected Sudan’s case against the UAE, which alleged complicity in genocide—stating that the UAE is not subject to such claims due to its withdrawal from certain provisions of the Genocide Convention.
UAE officials responded to the ruling, calling for international focus on ending the conflict and ensuring humanitarian aid reaches those affected in Sudan. Both the Sudanese army and the RSF have faced allegations of war crimes amidst the ongoing violence, indicating the complex and dire situation on the ground.
