A significant blackout that hit Spain on Monday has led to the tragic deaths of at least three individuals, as reported by the Civil Guard. These victims, a married couple and their adult son, were found deceased in their home in Taboadela, a municipality in the northwest region of the country. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities looking into the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning from a malfunctioning generator as a contributing factor.

Additional casualties from the power failure are also being examined, including a woman in her fifties in Madrid, who died in a fire that may have resulted from a candle being used during the outage. Emergency services reported that thirteen individuals received treatment for smoke inhalation, with five requiring hospitalization. Furthermore, another case reported a woman in her forties in Valencia, whose death is linked to her reliance on a ventilator that ceased functioning due to the power outage; however, her death remains somewhat unclear, with alternative reports citing natural causes due to existing health issues.

The blackout caused widespread disruption across Spain and neighboring Portugal, halting metro services, causing traffic signals to fail, and preventing businesses from processing card transactions, leading to long lines at remaining working ATMs. Initial communication failures compounded the chaos as mobile networks also experienced outages, leaving citizens desperate for updates.

Authorities have ruled out a cyber-attack as the cause of this unprecedented blackout, which also affected Andorra and parts of France, but investigations continue to identify the root cause of this significant incident and prevent future recurrences.
