At least four fatalities in violent attacks across Colombia’s south-western region
A wave of bombings and gunfire in Colombia results in multiple deaths and injuries, raising alarm over escalating security issues in the country.
The violence, involving car bombs, rifle fire, and a suspected drone, primarily struck Cali, Colombia's third-largest city, along with neighboring towns. The Colombian Ministry of Defence indicated that 19 separate attacks occurred, with media reports linking some to a faction of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). The attacks targeted police stations, municipal buildings, and civilians amidst a deepening security crisis. The Ministry has characterized the episode as a "desperate reaction" from illegal armed groups facing heavy military and police operations against them. Coinciding with these events was the recent assassination attempt on presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay in Bogotá, adding to the atmosphere of heightened violence. The Attorney General's office confirmed the arrest of a 15-year-old in relation to the attack on Turbay, although the individual has denied the charges brought against him.
As authorities continue to respond, the situation remains fluid and ongoing.
