Czech Republic Battles Toxic Blaze from Freight Train Derailment

A freight train accident in the Czech Republic ignites a major fire involving hazardous benzene tanks, prompting a large emergency response.

Local authorities manage the situation while ensuring public safety amidst a toxic threat in the air.

The Czech Republic is currently facing a significant crisis following the derailment of a freight train loaded with the highly hazardous chemical, benzene. This incident, which took place near Hustopeče nad Bečvou—approximately 50 kilometers south-west of the Polish border—has resulted in a fierce fire that consumed several tankers and a locomotive. Firefighters from multiple regions, alongside mobile chemical laboratories, quickly responded to the scene to combat the flames.

Eyewitness accounts describe flames reaching heights of up to 20 meters, with a massive cloud of thick black smoke visible for miles around. Fortunately, authorities have reported that there were no injuries resulting from the derailment, which occurred on a Friday.

The train reportedly "split apart" during the incident, leading to a nearby electric substation catching fire and causing power outages in Hustopeče. Dramatic footage captured by drones shows extensive damage, with several tankers still ablaze while firefighters engaged in efforts to control the situation. They deployed heavy foam to limit the fire's spread and utilized helicopters along with specialized chemical monitoring labs.

According to officials, around 15 out of 17 benzene tankers were impacted by the blaze, with each tanker approximately holding about 60 tonnes of the toxic substance. While the fire was under control after several hours, the estimated damage has been valued at around 125 million Czech koruna, equivalent to roughly £4.1 million.

Local residents have been advised to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed as a precaution against any air contamination. Czech news reports indicate that although precautions are in place, air quality has not yet surpassed any pollution thresholds. Meanwhile, the authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the derailment, emphasizing the urgency given the dangerous nature of benzene—a highly flammable and toxic chemical linked to serious health risks.
