Governor's Residence in Pennsylvania Targeted in Suspected Arson Attack
A 38-year-old man has been arrested following a disturbing arson incident at the Pennsylvania governor's home, highlighting significant security concerns.
In a shocking turn of events early Sunday morning, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's residence was attacked in what authorities are treating as a suspected arson incident. Cody Balmer, 38, was taken into custody and is set to face severe charges including attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault.
The incident occurred shortly after the Shapiro family celebrated the first night of Passover at their home in Harrisburg. Governor Shapiro stated he was awoken by law enforcement banging on his door as the flames began to spread. Fortunately, he and his family were able to evacuate without injury, although their historic home suffered extensive damage.
"I refuse to be trapped by the bondage that someone attempted to put on me by attacking us as they did last night," Shapiro remarked at a press conference, expressing his emotional response to the ordeal. The specifics behind Balmer's motives remain unclear.
Authorities report that Balmer entered the premises by climbing over a fence and had a homemade incendiary device with him when he was arrested nearby. After the fire was extinguished, investigators noted that it had caused "a significant amount of damage to a portion of the residence." The Harrisburg Bureau of Fire coordinated efforts to combat the flames while police ensured the safety of the Shapiro family.
Prior to Balmer's arrest, local authorities had issued a $10,000 reward for information leading to any suspect, although it remains uncertain whether this contributed to his capture. Shapiro, who took office as governor in 2023 following his role as attorney general, has previously been considered a potential Democratic presidential candidate.
The Pennsylvania Governor's Residence, a Georgian-style home built in 1968 encompassing 29,000 square feet, has hosted several governors throughout its history. Governor Shapiro, who lives with his wife Lori and their four children, has emphasized his commitment to maintaining the security of his family and his home following this alarming episode.
