Iranian Port Explosion Leaves 25 Dead and Over 1,100 Injured
A catastrophic blast at the Shahid Rajaee port in Iran prompts emergency declarations as rescue efforts continue amid health warnings.
A devastating explosion at the Shahid Rajaee port in Bandar Abbas, Iran, has led to a rising death toll of 25, with over 1,100 injured, according to reports from state media. The incident occurred on Saturday evening at the country's largest and most vital shipping port, sparking a major fire that devastated nearby areas. In light of toxic pollutants in the air, Iran's health ministry has declared a state of emergency for the region, advising residents to remain indoors.
By Sunday morning, firefighters had managed to contain most of the blaze, although efforts continued to extinguish the remaining 20 percent of the fire, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency. The Shahid Rajaee port is crucial for Iran's economy, having handled 85 percent of the nation’s container traffic and a significant portion of its oil in the previous year.
Initial investigations suggest that the explosion stemmed from containers of chemicals, with no indication of sabotage or a deliberate attack provided by authorities. This incident recalls a prior cyberattack attributed to Israel, which disrupted operations at the same port five years ago; however, Israeli officials declined to comment on the incident at this time.
In response to the tragedy, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has dispatched the interior minister to the site to oversee the investigation while urging a swift reconstruction and reopening of the port. Additionally, first vice president Mohammad Reza Aref emphasized the imperative to strengthen safety protocols across all ports and industrial facilities to avert similar disasters in the future.
