Trump Media Group Takes Legal Action Against Brazilian Judge Over Bolsonaro Indictment
The lawsuit comes in response to a Brazilian Supreme Court justice's potential decision on the arrest of former president Jair Bolsonaro, an ally of Donald Trump.
In an unprecedented legal move, the Trump Media & Technology Group filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, accusing him of unlawfully censoring conservative voices on social media. This action follows closely on the heels of Justice Moraes receiving an indictment that could lead to the arrest of Jair Bolsonaro, who previously served as Brazil’s president and remains a close ally of former President Donald Trump.
The lawsuit, submitted in a U.S. federal court in Tampa, also includes Rumble, a video platform based in Florida that champions itself as a bastion of free speech. The complaint claims that Justice Moraes has infringed upon the First Amendment by ordering Rumble to remove accounts belonging to specific right-wing Brazilian commentators, alleging that those orders impact the operation of these accounts within American jurisdiction and violate U.S. law.
While Trump Media has not been subject to Justice Moraes’ directives, it claims that changes to Rumble’s functionality could adversely affect its business, given their reliance on Rumble’s technology.
Justice Moraes has defended his actions by stating they are essential in safeguarding Brazil from perceived anti-democratic behavior exhibited by Bolsonaro and his followers. A spokesperson for the justice has not provided immediate comments on the legal actions taken against him.
