Xi and Putin Engage in Strategic Dialogue Following Trump's Inauguration
Chinese and Russian leaders strengthen ties amid concerns over U.S. policy and regional stability.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in a one-and-a-half-hour video call on Monday, only hours after Donald Trump was inaugurated as President of the United States. During this meeting, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to elevate bilateral relations to "greater heights," according to state media.
Putin addressed Xi as his "dear friend" and emphasized the importance of friendship, mutual trust, and support in their collaboration, despite external pressures. Xi echoed this sentiment, urging continued strategic alignment and mutual support to protect their nations' interests. This dialogue comes on the heels of Trump labeling China as an "abuser" and warning Russia of potential consequences unless a resolution is found for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
In response to the conflict in Ukraine, which Putin insists must consider Russia's interests, the Russian leader reiterated during the call the necessity of respecting these interests in any settlement, according to Yuri Ushakov, a foreign affairs advisor. Tensions have heightened amid accusations that China is supplying critical components that bolster Russia's military efforts in Ukraine. Notably, trade relations between China and Russia surged to a record $240 billion in 2023, marking a more than 64% increase since 2021.
Ushakov noted that both leaders expressed an openness to engage positively with the Trump administration, contingent on its willingness to pursue a mutually beneficial relationship. However, he clarified that the timing of their call was unrelated to Trump's inauguration.
The conversation also extended to various geopolitical issues, including developments in the Middle East, the situation on the Korean Peninsula, and Taiwan. China’s state media reported that Xi indicated readiness to collaborate with Russia in response to "external uncertainties," without detailing specific challenges.
Trump had previously held a "very good" discussion with Xi, touching on several topics, including trade dynamics, fentanyl, and app regulations, although discussions with Putin remain pending following a congratulatory message from the Russian leader during the inauguration.
