Investigators Probe Technical Failures Contributing to Fatal San Diego Plane Crash

Authorities are exploring whether fog and technical glitches at San Diego's airport contributed to a Cessna 550 crash that claimed the lives of six people, including renowned music agent Dave Shapiro and former drummer Daniel Williams. The National Transportation Safety Board is gathering evidence as they prepare for a preliminary report on the incident.

Investigators are trying to determine the factors behind a fatal plane crash in San Diego, which resulted in the deaths of all six passengers, among them former The Devil Wears Prada drummer Daniel Williams and music agent Dave Shapiro. The incident occurred early Thursday morning when a Cessna 550 crashed into a residential area, igniting cars and destroying a home.

Foggy weather conditions were reported in the region at the time of the crash, and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is examining if these weather elements, combined with technical glitches at the Montgomery Field Airport, may have played a role in the accident. NTSB investigator Dan Baker announced that the airport's Automated Surface Observing Station—which offers critical weather data for pilots—was "inoperative" due to an unrelated power surge, leaving pilots without crucial information during a period of low visibility.

Additionally, a Notice to Airmen (Notam) had been filed, alerting pilots that one of the runways was experiencing issues with its lighting system. The pilot of the Cessna, who did not report issues to air traffic control or declare an emergency, was aiming for the compromised runway when the crash happened. The plane reportedly struck high-tension power lines before plummeting into the Murphy Canyon neighbourhood, roughly two miles from its intended destination.

Authorities evacuated around 100 residents following the crash, and eight individuals on the ground sustained injuries from the incident, with one requiring hospitalization. The NTSB is working closely with the FBI to gather and secure evidence from the crash site. A preliminary report is expected within 30 days, while a comprehensive analysis may take up to two years.

Victims of the crash included Emma Huke, 25, and Kendall Fortner, 24, both recognized by their employer, Sound Talent Group, for their vibrant personalities. Dave Shapiro had a notable career in music management, collaborating with various rock bands, while Daniel Williams was a beloved member of The Devil Wears Prada. In the moments leading up to the crash, Williams shared images of himself and Shapiro in the cockpit on social media, underscoring the deep connection they shared. The band commemorated Williams' memory through heartfelt tributes, emphasizing his significant impact on their lives and music.
