A catastrophic bridge failure in Bryansk has resulted in seven fatalities and numerous injuries, primarily affecting train passengers.
At least seven lives have been lost following the collapse of a highway bridge in Bryansk, a region adjacent to the Ukraine border, as reported by Russian emergency services. The tragic incident saw heavy trucks fall onto a passing passenger train, resulting in injuries to approximately 30 individuals, including two children.
The Russian Emergencies Ministry has mobilized fire and rescue units to search for any individuals who may have been on the train at the time of the accident. Local governor Alexander Bogomaz shared the grim news via Telegram, confirming the fatalities and noting that two people, one of whom is a child, are in serious condition. All injured parties have since been transported to medical facilities within the Bryansk region.
Moscow Railway has claimed that the bridge's collapse resulted from "illegal interference in transport operations," prompting authorities to launch an investigation from Moscow's interregional transport prosecutor's office. Additional emergency responders, rescue equipment, and portable light sources have been dispatched to assist in ongoing nighttime operations, following the incident that occurred approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the Ukrainian border.
Social media has showcased harrowing images of twisted train carriages, with passengers aiding each other in navigating the wreckage amidst the chaos. The situation continues to develop as officials work to manage the aftermath of this tragic event.
