Train Derailments in Western Russia Lead to Multiple Casualties
Bridge Collapses Cause Passenger Train Accident with Fatalities; Another Bridge Collapse Occurs Soon After
An overpass collapse late Saturday in the Bryansk region of western Russia led to a tragic incident where a passenger train derailed, resulting in at least seven deaths and numerous injuries. Less than twenty-four hours later, another bridge also gave way while a freight train was passing, although fortunately, there were no fatalities in that incident.
The two collapses occurred approximately 77 miles apart, with the Bryansk region being near the Ukrainian border. Governor Aleksander Bogomaz of Bryansk reported that seven individuals lost their lives in the derailment and that medical facilities are currently treating 47 others, which includes three children. According to local reports, an explosion was cited as the cause of the overpass failure, although this has not been independently verified at this time.
In response to the catastrophe, Russian Railways announced that recovery trains have been dispatched to provide assistance. The Bryansk accident site is about 50 miles from the border with Ukraine.
Further complicating matters, there was a separate bridge collapse in the Kursk region, involving a freight train. Governor Aleksandr Khinshtein confirmed via social media that, while one train driver's legs were injured and transported to a hospital, no others sustained injuries. Earlier in June, President Vladimir V. Putin visited the Kursk area, which recently witnessed the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops after a surprise offensive.
As investigations continue, these incidents raise serious questions regarding the infrastructure's safety in regions that have been heavily impacted by ongoing tensions in the conflict with Ukraine.
