Deadly Bridge Collapses in Russia Raise Terrorism Concerns
Two separate bridge collapses in Russian regions have resulted in at least seven fatalities and sparked investigations into potential acts of terrorism.
At least seven people have died following the collapse of two bridges in different regions of Russia near the Ukraine border. The incidents have led to many more injuries, with at least 71 individuals reported hurt, prompting state media to investigate the events as potential terrorist acts.
The first incident transpired late Saturday night in Bryansk, where a road bridge fell onto a moving passenger train, according to regional governor Alexander Bogomaz. The consequences were catastrophic, resulting in the death of seven people. Images from the scene depict wrecked carriages, with passengers aiding one another to escape the chaos.
In a subsequent collapse hours later, another bridge in the Zheleznogorsk district of Kursk caused a locomotive train to derail. Acting governor Alexander Khinshtein confirmed that the train caught fire, leading to injuries sustained by the driver, specifically to their legs. In reaction to the incident, Khinshtein reassured the public that emergency services were active and investigating the causes of the collapse.
The Moscow Railway claimed that the Bryansk incident was due to "illegal interference," which raised suspicions amongst Ukrainian officials. A representative from Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council accused Russia of staging "false flag" operations to sway international opinion as peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine were set to occur in Turkey soon. Andrii Kovalenko emphasized that Ukraine had no reason to sabotage the Istanbul discussions, insisting that the blame laid squarely with Russia.
In response to the tragic events, Russian President Vladimir Putin was briefed throughout the night. Regional authorities reported that additional emergency responders and equipment had been deployed to the affected areas, with passengers evacuated from the wreckage and redirected to a nearby station for their safety. Reports indicate that the passenger train was on a route from Klimovo to Moscow when the disaster struck about 100 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
As the situation unfolds, the Ukrainian Air Force has reported a series of intense Russian strikes overnight, comprising 472 UAV and drone attacks alongside seven missile strikes across seven regions, further exemplifying the escalating tensions in the area.
