The International Criminal Court announces an independent investigation into sexual misconduct allegations against its chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, amidst his ongoing war crimes investigations.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has announced that an independent investigation is set to be launched into allegations of sexual misconduct against its chief prosecutor, Karim Khan. The inquiry, revealed on Monday, will be conducted by an external body, ensuring an impartial and fair review process, according to Paivi Kaukoranta, the chief of the assembly that oversees the court's operations.Karim Khan, who is known for pursuing arrest warrants against prominent Israeli and Hamas leaders relating to the Gaza conflict, has acknowledged the investigation while delegating his two deputy prosecutors to manage the situation internally. He expressed his willingness to engage in the investigative process. The controversy surrounding Khan emerged when a female colleague accused him of harassment, a claim he has denied. In recent reports, it was also alleged that Khan attempted to suppress these accusations, which he refutes. In late October, Kaukoranta stated that the court strives to attain the consent of any alleged victim prior to initiating an inquiry. However, after discussions with Khan's accuser, it became apparent that the court could not move forward.Khan subsequently took to social media, suggesting that the matter had been resolved without an investigation due to a lack of formal complaints. He also labeled the circulating allegations as "disinformation," calling for clarity on how such sensitive information was leaked to the public.
