In brief

After last year's Halloween celebrations turned into a platform for criticism against restrictions, Shanghai police have taken significant measures to restrict this year's events.

In a striking contrast to the open celebration of Halloween last year, this past weekend in Shanghai saw authorities intensifying their scrutiny of costumed revelers. Officers were evident escorting individuals clad in various costumes, including well-known figures and whimsical characters, away from the festivities, indicating a clear state of alert against the festivities.Videos on social media verified by multiple news outlets captured the scene as the police intervened. Among those removed were participants in costume such as a person dressed as a giant poop emoji and another mimicking Donald Trump. In an air of bewilderment, onlookers watched as a Kim Kardashian look-alike was ushered into a police van while playfully waving at the crowd.Last year’s celebrations had morphed into a rare form of public expression, as young people used the occasion to critique social issues. Costumed references to the grim realities of Covid lockdowns and job insecurities served as both humor and protest. In contrast, the Shanghai government had even praised last year’s Halloween festivities, describing them as showcasing “cultural tolerance” and a wholesome outlet for fun amid a restrictive atmosphere that often leaves little room for public joy or celebration. However, with an increasing tendency of the government to limit both political and personal freedoms, including seemingly innocuous celebrations, the authorities have grown wary following the widespread anti-lockdown protests of 2022. The government's shutdown of this year's Halloween festivities aligns with a broader trend of tightening controls on free expression in various domains, demonstrating their sensitivity to crowd dynamics and impromptu gatherings.
